| The increase in Italian Catholic immigrants to Germantown led to new churches and schools. The Holy Rosary Italian School opened c.1913 at 334 East Haines Street with a few students, and an annex had to be built the following year to accommodate the 400 students seeking admission. The new building was dedicated with a parade and "scores of dwellings in the immediate neighborhood were decorated with American and Italian flags." In lower Germantown, St. Michael of the Saints Church was started in 1924 for Italians, while Irish Catholics attended St. Francis of Assisi Church on West Logan Street. If you look closely, you can recognize the familiar faces of Cathy Kehan, Carole Courtney and Maureen Duffy in the front row!
